I discard a .dmg file into trash after installing something.
I use Disk Diag to remove the file, plus the caches, plus the logs, which most of which are likely linked to the installation.
I like how this application will mostly substitute for a much more expensive application [like CleanMyMac].
I also appreciate that this covers all my macs, not just one.
